What is a hoax 999 call and why are they bad??

Avon & Somerset Police have come up with the entertaining and innovative wheeze of putting time-wasting 999 calls on their site. Some of these are just great, if only to demonstrate how barking mad the so-called ‘customers’ of public services can be, like anyone needed telling. Take your pick from: a female caller ringing 999 to report an injured pigeon, another to request help in finding her glasses, a male caller phoning to say his wife has gone out without leaving any food to eat and stacks more.
